About
What’s the home of golf all about then?
The Home of Golf
The Home of Golf was set up in 2002 by Tom Kelly, as a website importing golf tees and other golf accessories from China. These golf products were sold throughout UK & Europe via ‘The Home of Golf ‘ website, eBay & Amazon.
Fourteen years later, in 2016, Tom took the decision to convert ‘The Home of Golf ‘ website into a golf blog. The blog is non-commercial and receives no revenue from any golf course or club. This means all reviews/posts/opinions are not swayed by financial return.
What’s the purpose of the blog?
The purpose of the blog is to promote Scotland and it’s golf courses. With Tom’s first hand knowledge of the courses, combined with a 5 star hotel management training at Gleneagles Hotel, the blog reveals great places to stay & play. It uncovers all sorts of courses from hidden gems to Open Qualifying courses and a whole load in between!
When asked what motivated him to start the blog, Tom replied:
“Over the years, I’ve encouraged visitors from all corners of the world to play different courses in Scotland. However, the vast majority just want to tick off top courses & pay a fortune for the privilege!”
“An example would be where a fourball has booked to play Royal Dornoch, cabothighlands.com, Carnoustie, St.Andrews, Kingsbarns, Gleneagles, Muirfield, Royal Troon & Turnberry. This would be a lifetime trip but an exhausting and expensive one at that.”
“When in Dornoch make sure you play Brora, Golspie, Tain and Fortrose & Rosemarkie. Even make your way up to the dunes and links at Wick Golf Club. When at Castle Stuart you’ve got to include Nairn, Nairn Dunbar and work your way along the North East coast via Moray GC, Elgin, Forres, Hopeman to Fraserburgh.”
“Golfing at Carnoustie has to include visits to Montrose, Monifieth, Panmure & Scotscraig. If you’re playing St.Andrews then the courses at Ladybank, Crail, Elie, Lundin Links & Leven must be on your list. Heading inland to Gleneagles then you have to visit the Rosemount & Lansdowne courses at Blairgowrie Golf Club as well as Alyth, Stirling & Glenbervie.”
“Muirfield sits in East Lothain where you could spend two weeks and play nothing but quality courses such as Gullane, North Berwick, Dunbar & Kilspindie to name a few.”
“Hopefully over time, I can get more visitors playing more of our great courses. If our blog can encourage an additional 5x four balls, visiting 4 courses per week in Scotland, 32 weeks of the year, each paying apx. £40 a round, then that would bring in over £100k to Scottish golf clubs & their communities per year! By the time you add accommodation, food and drink that figure could easily treble to £300k or more – that would make this blog worth while.” Tom Kelly (Sept 2017)
“Scotland is The Home of Golf and it’s here to be revisited – turn an exhausting lifetime trip in to 2-3 shorter, more meaningful visits and experience everything Scotland has to offer.”
